Urban Factory - Rome

2015 - Second Prize - Team: L. Martinelli, F. Schmelzer

The project proposes a device to activate neglected open spaces: a box, containing easy-to-build flexible elements (sitting places, toys, etc.), that can support several social scenarios. A type of tactical urbanism aimed at encouraging social cohesion, creativity and commitment by directly engaging the users in placemaking. The playfulness of the system, inspired by animal silhouettes, invites manipulation and transformation: according to contingent needs, the box and its elements can define lounge areas, a playground, a stage, etc. This resilience enhances a slow site-specific adaptation as a bottom-up evolutionary process.
